Press Room:

Launch Press Release

London 3 December 2002: On 3 December 2002, the fourth anniversary of the endorsement of the Washington Conference Principles on Nazi-Confiscated Art  at the Washington Conference on Holocaust-Era Assets, the Central Registry was launched in order to provide a unique range of information and educational resources on Nazi looted cultural property. This fulfils Principle VI which states: 'Efforts should be made to establish a central registry of such information'.

The Central Registry is an independent charitable organisation under the auspices of the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies, which is affiliated with the University of Oxford, and was  established through an initiative of the Commission for Looted Art in Europe. The Commission is the expert body in Europe which researches, locates and recovers looted cultural property for families and institutions from all over the world.

The resources of the Central Registry are freely available.

The site is a work in progress and new data will be added each week. The Central Registry staff hope the site will be a valuable resource for all kinds of users and that it will help increase understanding and knowledge of this devastating period of European cultural history.

The Central Registry holds information on over 20,000 objects from over 12 countries, as well as historical and current documentation from over 40 countries. All information held by the Central Registry is available either on the site or by writing to info@lootedart.com.

The Central Registry welcomes all comments, contributions and references to materials which can be included on the site for the benefit of users. Please email info@lootedart.com or write to The Central Registry, 76 Gloucester Place, London W1U 6HJ, England.
