Max Beckmann is considered one of the best-researched artists of classical modernism. Since his death in 1950, more than 4,500 publications have examined various aspects of Beckmann's life and work. The time of National Socialism with the associated defamation of Beckmann as a “degenerate artist” and his leaving Germany were decisive turning points in his biography. The description of the negative and existential consequences of this exclusion as a victim of Nazi art policy is a standard narrative of Beckmann art historiography and his outstanding positioning on the international art market.
Surprisingly, the period of National Socialism from 1933 to 1945 in Beckmann's life and work has hardly been systematically examined on a critical basis. The possible effects of Nazi cultural policy on his artistic work and his production and market conditions in Frankfurt, Berlin and Amsterdam need to be examined, as well as the practice of planning his life, his position in the art market, the maintenance or development of his personal network and the associated options for action , limitations or privileges as an artist.
More recent research on the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts, on other “degenerate” artists as well as the better accessibility and systematic development of Beckmann sources such as his diaries lead us to expect new results, for example on the circumstances of the move from Frankfurt am Main to Berlin and the often as “Exile” was the term used to describe a journey from Berlin to Amsterdam, to his network and supporters such as Lilly von Schnitzler and Erhard Göpel. The consequences of the war and the occupation of the Netherlands by the Germans on the everyday life of the Beckmanns and their artistic work are further questions that need to be investigated. This also applies to the exhibition activity, sales of works and possible market strategies of the artist and his dealers during the Nazi period as well as the reception of the artist in Germany and the USA immediately after 1945.
The Kaldewei Cultural Foundation and the Max Beckmann Archive of the Bavarian State Painting Collections are jointly organizing a three-day symposium in the Pinakothek der Moderne, in order to treat Max Beckmann during the National Socialist era in as comprehensive and multifaceted a manner as possible. From May 6th to 8th, 2024, speakers are invited to present their research in the Ernst von Siemens Auditorium.
