The Salzburg project began in July 2009 with the objective of detecting looted books in the current inventory of the University Library of Salzburg by means of a so-called 'autopsy', ie an item by item inspection of c 240,000 books.

The report by Andreas Schmoller, published on 1 August 2011, puts special emphasis on methodological questions and problems of historical sources in evaluating the acquisition  records of the 'Studienbibliothek Salzburg', the previous name of the University Library of Salzburg.

The paper also discusses the Library’s acquisition of Nazi-looted books in the period of National Socialism in the context of the current state of regional historical research.
