Das Gemälde „Die Füchse“ von Franz Marc ist jetzt bei der Erbin des ursprünglichen Besitzers

Düsseldorf – Die Stadt Düsseldorf hat das Gemälde „Die Füchse“ von Franz Marc an die Erben des einstigen jüdischen Besitzers zurückgegeben. Das teilte die Stadt am Donnerstag mit. Das Werk, dessen Wert auf rund 14 Millionen Euro geschätzt wird, wurde am Dienstag im städtischen Museum Kunstpalast übergeben.

Der Rückgabe war ein monatelanges juristisches Tauziehen vorausgegangen, nachdem der Rat der Stadt Ende April 2021 nach einem jahrelangen Raubkunst-Streit seine Zustimmung gegeben hatte. Das Marc-Gemälde war 1962 als Schenkung aus dem Schweizer Kunsthandel nach Düsseldorf gekommen. Das expressionistische Meisterwerk galt als eines der Spitzenwerke des Kunstpalastes.

Die Stadt Düsseldorf und die Erbengemeinschaft hatten im November 2021 eine Rückgabevereinbarung über das expressionistische Meisterwerk an die Erben des von den Nationalsozialisten verfolgten Kurt Grawi (1887-1944) beschlossen. Das Kommunalparlament war einer Empfehlung der Beratenden Kommission für Raubkunstfälle gefolgt. Die Rückgabe verzögerte sich zunächst wegen einer Strafanzeige und dann wegen einer schenkungsrechtlichen Prüfung der Stadt Düsseldorf. Die im Fall Grawi anspruchsberechtigte Erbin ist 92 Jahre alt.

Im September hatte sich der Jüdische Weltkongress in den Streit eingeschaltet und der Stadt Düsseldorf wegen der Verzögerungen mit juristischen Schritten gedroht.

„Mit der Rückgabe des Gemäldes an die Erben Kurt Grawis wird nun einer der wichtigsten Beschlüsse der bisherigen Amtsperiode vollzogen. Ich habe im Verlauf der Diskussionen stets betont, dass die Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf sich ihrer historischen Verantwortung bewusst ist und den Empfehlungen der Beratenden Kommission Folge leistet“, sagte Oberbürgermeister Stephan Keller (CDU).
