Merkel must do more on looted art

Congratulations to German Chancellor Angela Merkel on being awarded the Presidential Medal of Distinction in Jerusalem this week. But well deserved as the honour may be, there is one field in which Germany and Chancellor Merkel deserve no medals, only brickbats: returning property stolen from German Jews to its rightful owners. As we report, not only is it made deliberately hard for families to find out any information about their property; when it is found, German museums and authorities obfuscate and delay. Mrs Merkel is in most respects a great friend. It would be to her great credit if she could now turn her attention to this running sore.
