Author

Professor Dr Christoph Zuschlag

Date

Description

1. Einleitung: Was heisst und zu welchem Ende betreibt man Provenienzforschung? 2.

Introduction to Provenance Research: Deciphering the origin of cultural property

Provenance research investigates the origin and ownership history of a wide variety of cultural objects. It has always been part of the canon of methods in art history, for example when it comes to the history of collections or questions of attribution. However, it is only since the current restitution debates that it has become generally known as an important discipline. Christoph Zuschlag. Professor of Provenance Research in Bonn, provides a comprehensive and knowledgeable introduction to the history and methods of one of the most explosive areas of art history. The restitution of Nazi looted property, the discovery of the Gurlitt Collection, the debates about expropriations in the GDR and in the former colonies - for some years now, provenance research has been booming and has been at the centre of public interest. Provenance research writes biographies - not of people, but of objects in their respective historical context. This book is the first profound introduction to this important field of art history.

Chapters:
1. Introduction: What does provenance research mean and to what end?
2. From Legendary Provenance to Historical-Critical Provenance Information
3. Translocation of cultural objects
4. Methods of provenance research
5. Provenance research in relation to historical contexts of injustice
6. Outlook: The Provenance Turn or why we need more transparency in museums with regard to the provenance of objects
