Quelle und Kontext I: Die Kunsthandlung Julius Böhler als Akteur auf dem Kunstmarkt, International Conference, Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte Munich, 27 April 2022, 12-18.00

International Conferences

Founded in 1880, the Munich art dealer Julius Böhler was one of the largest art dealers in the German-speaking world in the first half of the 20th century, with an international reputation. Since 2015, the gallery's card index system has been housed at the Central Institute for Art History, and since 2019 it has been indexed in a database. On June 1, 2021, a beta version was published at http://boehler.zikg.eu/; the database, which has been fundamentally revised in its functionalities and design, is scheduled to go online at the end of May 2022.

On April 27, 2022, the project team will provide insights into the trade relations of this well-connected actor using case studies as examples to discuss the challenges of interpreting the source material. The numerous inquiries from external users with a wide variety of backgrounds and interests meanwhile allow for a more differentiated problematization of the requirements for dealing with the material. In particular, the discrepancy between the duty of confidentiality and requests for information must be discussed: Who receives what information? What are the interests involved? Which legal regulations have to be followed? What impact do these factors have on the release of data on the Internet? And what consequences for collection, art market and provenance research can be expected from the publication of digital data?
