Text published by the Central Institute for Art History, Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte, Munich:

In July 2018, the initial phase of the Stern Cooperation Project (SCP) started.

Julius, Selma, Max, Hedi and Gerda Stern and the business history of the Stern-owned Galleries Galerie Stern (Dusseldorf), West's Galleries (London), and Dominion Gallery (Montreal) in the years 1913-1987.

SCP has entered the research field of the Max Stern Art Restitution Project (MSARP) since 2002. While MSARP - piloted by Dr. med.Clarence Epstein and Willi Korte - Focus on the return of individual art works that has been deleted, SCP has a much broader mission: Transnational transdisciplinary co-operation, SCP attempts to reconstruct forced migration of both family and business. Reconstructing trajectories of persecution as well as individuals and enterprises. It is inevitable, however, that the findings of the SCP intersect with questions of the world in relation to Nazi looted art, and specifically with the concerns of MSARP.

Project

The Stern Cooperation Project (SCP) started work in July 2018. The project deals with the history of the German art dealer family of Jewish origin Julius, Selma, Max, Hedi and Gerda Stern and the history of the galleries owned by the Stern family from 1913-1987: Galerie Stern (Dusseldorf), West's Galleries (London ) and Dominion Gallery (Montreal).

Thus, SCP enters a field of research that has been studied since 2002 by the Max Stern Art Restitution Project (MSARP). During MSARP - under the direction of dr. Clarence Epstein and dr. Willi Korte - concentrating on the identification and return of individual stolen art works, SCP pursues a much broader approach: in international and interdisciplinary cooperation, the SCP tries to reconstruct the persecution-related migration history of both the family and the art trade. SCP develops strategies that could be helpful to researchers facing similar challenges in reconstructing persecution from both individuals and companies.

The research findings of the SCP are inevitably linked to the virulent questions about persecution-related cultural assets and Nazi-looted art, which are currently being intensively researched and which play a central role in particular for the MSARP.
