This workshop will be held in Washington DC, at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) from approximately 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. The workshop is designed for advanced researchers, with prerequisite experience, with preference given to those who currently have a museum affiliation and is limited to 30 participants to ensure a useful hands-on experience. 

The workshop is cosponsored by the Association of Art Museum Directors; the National Archives and Records Administration; and the American Alliance of Museums.

Workshop leaders for the program are Nancy Yeide, Head, Department of Curatorial Records, National Gallery of Art and Chris Naylor, Director, Textual Records, NARA. 

After a welcome by the Archivist of the United States, instructors will guide participants in hands-on exercises to familiarize them with contents and access to relevant documents at the National Archives. Following a brief review of materials on Fold3 and the International Research Portal, this Workshop will emphasize some lesser known non-digitized National Archives Record Groups that can provide significant information on European collectors and collections lost during WWII. These include the records of the US Department of State, the Office of Foreign Assets Control, and the Department of Justice Foreign Claims Settlement Commission. There will also be an introduction to the new National Archives on-line catalogue and digitized documents available there, and a presentation of a pilot project to access documents, presented by the faculty of the Digital Curation Innovation Center, University of Maryland.

Since the workshop will include some use of National Archives documents available on The International Research Portal and the National Archives on-line catalogue, each participant should bring a wifi-capable laptop or tablet in order to participate.

On Wednesday, November 4, an optional tour of the National Archives at College Park will be offered from 10:00-12:00.

Registration fee:  $175 to be paid by check or Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover.  To secure your place the registration fee is due 10 days after notification of registration. No payment is due with the application.

Registration includes a continental breakfast and lunch and optional tour of National Archives in College Park.

The Samuel H. Kress Foundation is offering a $500 stipend to defray expenses to the first fifteen qualified applicants who indicate need. To qualify for the stipend participants must be from a U.S. museum, which is not located in the Washington, DC metropolitan area; the stipend will be paid to the museum at time of on-site registration and only one applicant per museum may apply.
