Title
Archival Collections, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) in Washington

Description
The USHMM in Washington D.C. is a national research institution for Holocaust history which also serves as the US memorial to the millions who died during the Holocaust. The Library contains over 35,000 volumes in English, German, Polish, Hebrew, or Yiddish. The titles can be searched in the Library's online catalogue at www.ushmm.org/research/library. The collection of journals includes historical newspapers and newsletters on microfilm.

Archival Collections
Since the fall of communism, the USHMM has given priority to identifying, copying preserving and acquiring Holocaust- related archival documents and is active in collecting records in 39 countries. Over 18 million pages of records are now in the Museum. The records come from both private and public archives and repositories including France, Romania, the Netherlands, Poland, Croatia, Russia, Germany and Austria. As a result of these activities, the USHMM has amassed the largest concentration of Holocaust-related records outside Israel. There is an  Archival Guide to the Collections online at www.ushmm.org/research/center/archguide.  An online index lists all subjects included within the Collections

Archival records at USHMM include:

  • RG-01 Records of the President's Commission on the Holocaust, the United States Holocaust Memorial Council and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
  • RG-06 War Crimes Investigations and Prosecutions. This record group includes the records of the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg and trial in the Federal Republic of Germany.
  • RG-11 Selected records from the former Special [Osobyi] State Archive in the Russian State Military Archive (RGVA). This record group includes collections from the archives seized by the Soviet Trophy Brigades in Soviet-occupied Germany at the end of the war. These archives include records of official Nazi agencies such as the Berlin Gestapo, Nazi Party (NSDAP) organisations and non-governmental bodies.

In relation to the history of Nazi looting, of particular interest are the Eisatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg (ERR) files in the following collections:

  • RG-06.022 Lena Fishman Fagen Collection.

  • RG-11.001M.21 Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg (Fond 1401). Files concerning Yugoslavia and ERR efforts to loot cultural material. • RG-28 Restitution and Reparations.

  • RG-26 Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg. ERR records of the organisation's pillage of Lithuanian museums and libraries.

  • RG-31.002M Selected Records from the Central State Archive of Higher Government Organizations of Ukraine (formerly Central State Archive of the October Revolution of Ukraine), Kyiv. This collection includes ERR files documenting the looting of libraries and archives.

  • RG-43 Archives de Nuremberg: Rosenberg. This collection comprises a microfilm copy of the records from the archives of Alfred Rosenberg, head of the ERR, which are held in the Centre de Documentation Juive Contemporaine (CDJC), Paris. Some of the files concern the confiscation of books, furniture, and works of art. (CDJC cartons CXXXIX-CXLVI).
