Title
Department of National Heritage and the Preservation of Historic Monuments (Departament Dziedzictwa Narodowego I Ochrony Zabytkow)

Description
Part of the Ministry of Culture and Art (Ministerstwo Kultury I Sztuki) this Department has jurisdiction over Polish Museums and over state cultural institutions, which are involved with the preservation of historic monuments. It also runs the registry of museums in Poland. It organises an information system documenting museum collections and other historic monuments for the whole of Poland. The Department is also a part of the Museum Council of Poland, under the auspices of the Minister of Culture and of the International Council for Auschwitz (<www.auschwitz.gov.pl>).

The Department co-operates with non-governmental bodies, organisations, unions and other such bodies, which ensure the protection of the national heritage of Poland. It runs a programme whose aim is to record the losses to Polish culture suffered during World War II and to document the circumstances of these losses. To this end it, organises the tracing of lost cultural patrimony now abroad and undertakes efforts towards restitution.

A monthly calendar of the Department's activities is published on the Ministry's web site < www.mkis.gov.pl >, under the sub-heading of the department and displays information, when applicable, relating to the latest efforts towards restitution.
