Title

The Netherlands Institute for Art History (Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie - RKD)

Description
The purpose of the Netherlands Institute for Art History is the collection of visual and written documentary material on Western - and particularly Dutch - fine and applied art from the late medieval to the contemporary period. The Institute was founded in 1932, based on the bequest of the art historian Dr Cornelis Hofstede de Groot. This early collection contained a corpus of around 100,000 photos and reproductions as well as some 300,000 personal notations on Dutch painting and graphic art of the seventeenth century, together with several thousand auction catalogues.

At present the collection of text and image documentation, the largest of its kind in the world, is divided into four parts: 7,000,000 items of visual documentation (photos, slides, reproductions), 410,000 books, periodicals as well as collection, exhibition and auction catalogues; 2,000,000 fiches with art-historical notes; archivalia (personal archives of artists, art dealers and art historians, photo albums, etc) and 2,000,000 newspaper cuttings.
