The State Secretary of the Netherlands

Herkomst Gezocht (Origins Unknown), which comes under the jurisdiction of the Cultural Heritage Inspectorate, and is supervised by the Ekkart Committee , was set up in 1998 to carry out provenance research into the ownership of the art objects in the NK collection (Nederlands Kunstbezit-collectie), using the archives of the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD), the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation (NIOD) and the archives of the Netherlands Art Property Foundation (SNK) which was responsible for the recovery and restitution of works of art between 1945 and 1952. The NK collection consists of works of art confiscated during World War II and repatriated from Germany after the war which remain in the custody of the Dutch state. The NK Collection is today part of the Instituut Collectie Nederland (ICN), which is itself part of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.

The research is published in yearly interim reports:

  • Origins Unknown, Report on the pilot study into the provenance of works of art recovered from Germany and currently under the custodianship of the State of the Netherlands; Origins Unknown, April 1998.
  • Interim report I, The Hague, October 1999.
  • Origins Unknown, Interim report II, The Hague, October 2000.
