Address by the Prime Minister Lionel Jospin at the dinner given by the CRIF (Representative Council of Jewish Institutions of France)
28 November 1998, Paris
Lionel Jospin, Prime Minister of France
On the subject of looted property during the Holocaust, Prime Minister Jospin reiterates his support for reparation and restitution. He outlines some of France's future plans for following through with this commitment: French participation in the Washington Conference for Looted Holocaust-Era Assets; the allocation of 20 million francs to the international aid fund for victims of Nazi persecution (intended in particular for those Eastern European Jews who suffered at the hands of Nazism and the Communist regime and were prevented from receiving compensation paid after the war); the increase in funds for the Mattéoli task force; and the commitment to an appropriate resolution of the status of MNR paintings (Musées Nationaux Récupération) in French museums.
