Programme Details 24 July 2017

The first International Workshop of the HERA project "Transfer of Cultural Objects in the Alpe Adria Region in the 20th Century" (TransCultAA) will take at the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca on 18-19 September 2017.

The workshop will focus on Jewish-owned cultural property in the Italian Alpe Adria region.

As a geographic zone of transit, the Alpe Adria region, broadly understood, was characterized by an intense displacement of cultural assets owned by Jews through confiscation, plunder and seizure by German and Italian authorities during WWII.

The TransCultAA project members will point out the complexity of the phenomenon at a transnational level. In particular, they will present and analyze the different administrative practices in the management of Jewish-owned heritage, investigate the institutions, organizations and networks, examine the trajectories of victims and perpetrators, and also try to document the objects present or in transition on the territory. In doing so, the aim of the TransCultAA project is not only to trace the tangible movement of objects, but also their role as symbolic capital. Accordingly, alongside ‘high’ art also ‘low’ art and everyday objects – which all played a role in developing individual, collective and national identities – will be taken into account. Finally, multinational members of TransCultAA will share the results of their recent and ongoing research projects, and recommend new approaches and paths for investigations in this field.

First Posting 17 February 2017:

The first International Workshop of the HERA project “Transfer of Cultural Objects in the Alpe Adria Region in the 20th Century” (TransCultAA) focuses on the Jewish-owned cultural property in the Italian Alpe Adria region. See www.transcultaa.eu for full details of the project, research team, events, etc.

As a geographic zone of transit, the Italian Alpe Adria region, broadly understood, was characterized by an intense displacement of cultural assets owned by Jews through confiscation, plunder and seizure by German and Italian authorities during WWII.

The TransCultAA project members will point out the complexity of the phenomenon at a transnational level. In particular, they will present and analyze the different administrative practices in the management of Jewish-owned heritage, investigate the institutions, organizations and networks, examine the trajectories of victims and perpetrators, and also try to document the objects present or in transition on the Italian territory.

Within this setting of an international workshop, we invite scholars and researchers (either attached to universities, to museums, to cultural heritage institutions, authorities, or working independently, as freelancers) to submit proposals for a Poster Session and a Paper Session taking place on 20th-
21st September 2017 at IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca, Italy. The workshop language is English. Attendance is free, but please register your participation. The procedure for registration will be published on the IMT website.

Call for Papers and Posters
We welcome proposals on any aspect of the conference theme with regard to the Italian Alpe Adria Region (and beyond), particularly (but not limited to) the following:

For any questions, please contact: hera@imtlucca.it

Call for Papers
Proposals for the Paper sessions must include the following:

Please submit the abstract and the documentation in English in one single pdf file with your family name to hera@imtlucca.it by March 15, 2017.

Paper proposals will be reviewed and submitters be notified by April 2017

The selected abstracts will be published on IMT Lucca website by September, 15. The speakers will present their papers in 20 minutes during the workshop. Speakers are expected to answer questions from the audience.

Call for Posters
Proposals for the Poster sessions must include the following:

Please submit the abstract and the documentation in English in one single pdf file with your family name to hera@imtlucca.it by March 15, 2017.Poster proposals will be reviewed and submitters be notified by April 2017.

It is important that applicants describe in their abstract how they intend to present the project in the poster format – what kind of visual materials they will use, and how these illustrate the project or a particular aspect of the work. The poster has to be an experience in itself for anyone who looks at it – and should show awareness of the format of a poster-session and its purpose to engage the viewer in conversation.

Please make sure that your topic fits on a printed poster. For printed posters, the standard poster size of DIN A0 (841mm wide x 1189mm high) is the minimum size. It is recommended that a printed poster be no larger than 900mm wide and 1900mm high. Photographs, graphics and texts attached should also fit within this size.

The selected abstracts will be published on IMT Lucca website by September, 15. The organizers would certainly welcome the participation of presenters in the workshop, and in particular during the 60 minutes poster session in the afternoon of September, 20. Presenters are expected to answer questions from the audience. Although highly welcome, the presence of poster authors at the workshop is not mandatory.
