Rudolf von Alt (1812-1905) is one of the most famous Austrian artists of the 19th century. Even as a young pupil of his father Jacob, he specialized in landscapes and cityscapes and continued in this genre into his 80s. The collection in the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung Munich is the most important outside Austria, especially as it comes to a large extent from the artist's daughter and shows the works of his youth, the late work and working sketches to a unique extent. Other important works originate in Viennese private collections, including Jewish collections. A project funded by the Office for Provenance Research in Berlin explored the origin of the 617 drawings and watercolors by Jakob and Rudolf von Alt, which arrived in the Munich collection in 1959 and came from the collections of the Nazi leadership. Some works have been identified as looted and will be restituted. The exhibition will also ask questions and present the results of the provenance research for discussion.

A catalogue of the exhibition (titled 'Rudolf von Alt. „…genial, lebhaft, natürlich und wahr". Der Münchner Bestand und seine Provenienz'), edited by Dr Andreas Strobl and which contains all the research and provenance information, has been published by Deutscher Kunstverlag and is widely available for purchase.
