Description

(The Practice of Collecting Art: Individuals and Institutions in the Focus of Provenance Research)

Volume 5 of the series ‘Schriftenreihe der Kommission für Provenienzforschung’ illustrates the fate of Viennese collections during the Second World War. Collectors and their collections were an essential part of Vienna’s cultural ambience which disappeared after March 1938. Once famous collections and collectors not only disappeared from the city of Vienna, but also from public consciousness.

Since 1998 the Commission for Provenance Research in Austria has been researching the ownership history of individual works of art, but they are also researching the context of the works of art, their loss and the fate of their owners.

The history of the following Viennese collections is discussed in this volume: Gustav Benda, Willibald Duschnitz, Emil Geyer, Gottfried and Hermann Eissler, Anton and Walter Exner, Ernst Moriz Kronfeld, Richard Kulka and the collection of the family Heißfeld – Kulka, Dr. Oskar Reichel, as well as the collection of Ernst and Gisela Pollack.

Further essays discuss the ownership relationships in the collection of Galerie Alfred Flechtheim, the career of the painter Jehudo Epstein, the history of Joseph Gregor and the Theatre Collection of the National Library in Vienna, the history of collecting Egon Schiele at the Belvedere in Vienna and provenance research at the Library of the Institute of Art History at the University in Vienna.

Publisher's Description
