Description

Publisher's text:

Under National Socialism not only did a gigantic art theft take place, but also valuable books were confiscated in a big way: whole libraries changed hands.

Book theft in the region of Salzburg was also part of a European venture, a well-organised struggle for ideological hegemony, money and trophies. The University Library Salzburg, as part of a research project, has recorded the role played by its predecessor, the Research Library, both in the hunt for books and after the war, and, through painstaking detective work, has attempted to trace the provenance of all the looted books which, so many decades later, are still on the shelves of the library.

The book focuses on the history of the University Library and its employees from 1938 to 1950 and identifies the first victims, the perpetrators and the beneficiaries of the book thefts in Salzburg.  It sets out the research strategies used to identify the stolen books after more than 70 years and presents the resulting findings about the fates of the victims.
