The Project for
the Documentation of Wartime Cultural Losses (The Documentation Project)
Description
The
Documentation Project was created to collect and make available information on
works of art, archives, and other types of cultural property displaced as a
consequece of war. The major focus of research is the World War II period. The
primary aim of the Documentation Project is to publish the results of its
research and make it available on the internet, where appropriate.
The site reproduces:
Original wartime photographs of looted works of art in
the Jeu de Paume, the Nazi repository for confiscated works of art in Paris.
An original list of art objects exhibited at the Jeu de Paume selected for
the collection of Hitler in 1941.
An original list of objects made available to Göring.
A Nazi list of seized Jewish art collections.
The complete text of the Art Looting Investigation Unit Final Report, 1 May 1946, which was produced by the Office of
Strategic Services (OSS) in 1945 and 1946. It contains lists of individuals
involved in the looting of Europe, interviews with those who organised and took
part in the looting and reviews of captured documents.
