Description
The institute was established in 1897 by German art historians in Italy. Its library houses approximately 215,000 volumes, and concentrates on Italian art. It has an online catalogue and participates in the consortium of three German research libraries specialising in the history of art.

The photograph archives are open to researchers and include approximately 543,000 photographs of Italian art from the Middle Ages to the present. The photographs are organised according to iconography, geography, and artist.
