the subject of looted property during the Holocaust, Prime Minister
Jospin reiterates his support for reparation and restitution. He outlines some
of France's future plans for following through with this commitment:
French participation in the Washington Conference for Looted Holocaust-Era Assets;
the allocation of 20 million francs to the international aid fund for victims of
Nazi persecution (intended in particular for those Eastern European Jews who
suffered at the hands of Nazism and the Communist regime and were prevented from
receiving compensation paid after the war); the increase in funds for the
Mattéoli task force; and the commitment to an appropriate resolution of the
status of MNR paintings (Musées Nationaux Récupération) in French museums.
